A Door Release Keyswitch / External Lock Override is a physical security device used in access control systems to manually unlock or release a secured door, gate, electric strike, or magnetic lock.

What It Is

It’s essentially a key-operated switch mounted near a controlled entry point. When the correct key is turned in the switch, it activates the door release mechanism, temporarily overriding the electronic lock so the door can be opened without using a card, code, or other credential.

How It Works

• The keyswitch is wired into the access control system or directly to the door release relay.

• Under normal conditions, the door remains locked under electronic/electromagnetic control.

• When an authorized person inserts and turns the key:

  • The keyswitch closes an electrical circuit.

  • This energizes a relay that momentarily triggers the door release.

  • The door unlocks so it can be opened manually.

Some systems allow the keyswitch to toggle (stay in the unlocked position until turned back), while others only release the door as long as the key is turned.
