Centurion infrared beam sensors, also known as infrared safety beams or photocells, are safety devices used with automatic gates to detect people, vehicles, pets, or other objects in the gate's path. They consist of an infrared transmitter and receiver positioned opposite each other. The transmitter continuously sends an invisible infrared beam to the receiver, and when the beam is interrupted, the gate controller responds according to its programmed safety settings.

How they work

The transmitter sends an infrared signal to the receiver. As long as the beam remains uninterrupted, the gate can operate normally.

When a person, vehicle, pet or object enters the beam's path, the receiver detects the interruption and changes its relay output. The gate controller then responds according to whether the beams are configured as closing safety beams or opening safety beams.

For example, with closing beams, if the gate is closing and someone walks into its path, the gate can stop and reopen. If the gate is open and the beam remains interrupted, the gate can remain open until the obstruction clears.
